How Casting and Google Chromecast Works

Google Chromecast is a streaming dongle that can be plugged into a TV or monitor using an HDMI port and stream audio and video from another device.

In the casting diagram below Chromecast functions as a cast receiver.

How Casting Works

A control device e.g. a mobile phone locates the content on the Internet e.g a YouTube video.

If the content site supports the cast protocol the control device can then cast the content to a receiver e.g a TV that also supports the cast protocol.

The streaming content goes direct to the receiver but the control device can control the streaming process.
